The Burge Family Winemaking tradition first started in the late 1860s. Today when it comes to winemaking, Rick Burge is very much a ‘minimalist’ and believing very much in French concept of ‘terroir’, he prefers to do most of his winemaking in the vineyard in the 5 months leading up to harvest, controlling yields, managing a flavour inducing canopy and generally aiming for the best possible sugar/acid/flavour balance.

brokenchack 2The property, a working vineyard for over a century, was then producing Riesling and Shiraz grapes, boasting what is thought to be some of the oldest Riesling vines in Australia, planted back in 1896, alongside Shiraz vines dating back to 1927. Following their first 2008 vintage of a tiny 37 dozen, ‘Jack Harrison’ Shiraz (just to see what hey had), their excitement only grew when the exceptional quality of the wine spoke for itself.

Winemaking and viticulture can be quite complicated, yet wonderfully simple at the same time. I consider the past 400 years of our Italian traditions and the last 175 of our Barossa winemaking heritage, while using an analytical and scientific approach to understand our soil health and our vine tissue.

Their commitment to the environment is reflected in their choice to use organic grapes, which not only helps to limit the impact on the environment, but also results in wines of exceptional quality and traceability.

DogRidge is a small family-owned venture that started when our first vineyard was purchased in 1992. We now produce a range of boutique wines from 90 acres of premium McLaren Vale vineyards. DogRidge is the name of an old-fashioned vine rootstock and strangely it caught our imagination. Given the main house is on a ridge overlooking the vines, and we are besotted with curly haired – four legged friends, you can figure it out.

The idea for the formation of the Kurtz Family Vineyards is by no means unique. It commenced from a long family history of growing grapes, drinking the end product and a desire to see wine made exclusively from our own grapes. My Great Grandfather, Alfred Bernhard (Ben) Kurtz, began growing grapes in the sub-region of Light Pass in the Barossa Valley back in the 1930’s and this very same block is still worked to this day. Grandfather, Bernhard Otto Kurtz, commenced grape growing in 1957 at his Light Pass vineyard and my father, John Bernhard Kurtz and my mother Erril, moved to the existing vineyards in the early 1960’s.
